Noise and Hearing Loss
As people age then so does the quality of
their hearing. This results in our hearing deteriorating
naturally as we age even if we have never been
exposed to high noise levels. However, add on
the effects of excessive noise exposure in our
working or private lives and that natural deterioration
is magnified to the extent that we may become
“hard of hearing” or even “deaf.”
The control measures outlined in the SHIFT Noise
Control Guidance Notes will reduce the risk of
suffering hearing loss. However, many are dependant
on employees using them and often it is difficult
for the worker to percieve the risk. To assist
with the understanding of risk HSE has developed
a noise “tape” which graphically demonstrates
the effect of diminished hearing due to exposure
to noise. This is available from the internet
at the link below and comes in several languages.
