SHIFT Safety & Heath Foundry Targets Initiative

Are you interested in improving the health, safety & well-being of yourself, your colleagues and/or your workforce? - YES!  then read on

Today's modern foundry environment can still be as hard and physically demanding as it always has been and regrettably sometimes accidents can occur.
More often than not they are not serious, but, when significant injuries are sustained, it affects not only the injured person but also their family, friends, work colleagues and can have a negative impact on the entire business.

The Safety & Health in Foundries Targets initiative (SHIFT) was created and designed by the UK foundry industry supported by foundries, CMF, HSE, CHASAC, Unite the Union & Community Union amongst others, with the purpose of helping UK foundries control the risks to the health, well-being and safety of their employees.

The initiative is designed to share knowledge and best practice amongst its members across a broad range of topics from risk assessment to manual handling, slips, trips and falls, to safe systems of work through to and including occupational health issues such as respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and legionella, to name just a very few.

The initiative, now in its second phase, has the core objective of minimising health risks to workers and reducing the level of accidents by 25% between 2012 and 2017 to improve the wellbeing of those employed within the UK foundry industry.

With over 120 foundries in membership ranging from the very smallest to the very largest in the UK, SHIFT covers those producing in any metal, by any process and of any weight.

If you operate a UK foundry process, even if it is for producing parts in-house for fitting into other products you make, or for producing raw materials, ingots or billets for others to re-melt and cast into products and want to know more about the work we do, contact the Cast Metals Federation HS Officer on 0121 601 6392 or by e-mail richardheath@cmfed.co.uk
