Health and Safety Performance in the Foundry Industry
The annual statistics published by the HSE provide us with a useful insight into the performance of the industry and give organisations a benchmark against which to compare their performance. What is noticeable is that the foundry industry has an accident rate that is significantly above the all industry average and that of comparable industries such as manufacturing and construction. However, the gross figures conceal a wide variation in performance between companies within the industry, as reported in the first round of data received from those within the SHIFT Initiative.

Incidence Rate (per 100,000 employees) 2002/3

All Molten Metal Inds       2163
Manufacturing Inds         1131
Construction                  1172
All Inds                          614

Over the last 7 years the rate of accidents within the molten metal industries has fallen significantly, although still runs over that of similar industries.
